Anxious Patients
At Gateway Dental, we understand that many patients are nervous about visiting the dentist. Our staff are sympathetic and experienced in working with anxious patients. We will always take your concerns seriously.
There are many reasons you might fear the dentist. You may have had a bad experience in the past or heard stories from family or friends. There may be a specific trigger for your fear; the sight of a needle, the sounds of the drill, the smell of a dental practice. You may fear not being in control, or worry about being judged if you haven’t visited a dentist in many years. Whatever the cause of your fear, Gateway Dental will do everything we can to help you overcome it. We believe that everyone deserves a healthy, happy smile and you will always be treated with care, respect, and professionalism.
Our clinic has been designed to create a peaceful, soothing, and calm environment specifically with your needs in mind. From the moment you enter reception our aim is for you to feel relaxed and comfortable. You can listen to your favorite music through headphones while having treatment to aid relaxation and you can take a break at any time during your treatment. We are using several techniques such as ‘Tell-Show-Do‘, ‘Control & Distraction’, ‘Stop Signal’, ‘Self-hypnosis’, and ‘Breathing & Muscle relaxation’. Premedication is another way we can apply in specific cases.
Every appointment goes at your pace. We fully inform patients about every treatment and encourage questions. Sedation is another service we offer for nervous patients. During sedation, you will be conscious to co-operate with your dentist, but you will also feel relaxed and unbothered by your treatment.
Sedation for nervous patients
If you are nervous about having dental treatment or you are having a procedure that may cause discomfort, intravenous (IV) sedation is an effective and safe treatment.
While under IV sedation, you will feel deeply relaxed but you will still be able to understand and respond to requests from the dentist. You will be unaware of the operation and this form of treatment is ideal for patients who wish to avoid the noise and vibration of the drill.
IV sedation is extremely safe when it is supervised by a specially trained dentist.
